Very few of us go through life without wanting to make some changes to our eyebrow shape. The problem? Most of us make total messes out of our brows when we try to DIY it. However, with a steady hand and a little patience, learning how to shape your own eyebrows is totally doable. Learn how to shape your eyebrows with some tricks of the trade below.

Step One: Measure Out Your Ideal Eyebrow Shape

The three key points that define your eyebrows are the inner corner, the peak of the arch, and the end. In order to measure out where those should fall on your face, experts have devised a handy measuring system: Hold an eyebrow pencil or makeup brush vertically right against the tip of your nose. Wherever this lines up against your brow is where the inner corner should start. Next, slant the pencil outward from the side of your nose to where the iris of your eye begins. This is where the arch of your brow should peak. Finally, continue to pivot the pencil from the edge of your nose to where the outer corner of your eye is. Where this lines up with your brow is the ideal spot for the brow to end. Mark each of these three spots with an eyebrow pencil as you measure.

Step Two: Outline the Perimeter

Next, using the three guide points, sketch out the borders of your ideal brow. This is similar to a game of "connect the dots," as you'll outline the shape of your brows in the cleanest, straightest lines possible to create a visual border using the guide points as your anchors. It's OK if some of these borders fall within your own brow hairs, while other spots fall just outside of them. The idea is to see where your "perfect" brow should fall, and then you'll be able to adjust your own brows slightly by filling in bare spots with pencil and removing excess hairs with tweezers.

Step Three: Fill In Your Eyebrows

Now, use a brow pencil to fill in the border, using light, feathery strokes that mimic actual brow hairs. You don't want to color in a solid brow. Instead, create tiny strokes and maintain some bare skin in order to achieve a natural look. Some people prefer to use a hard, angular brow brush and brow powder vs. a pencil. Use whatever is easiest for you.

Step Four: Tweeze Away Strays

Once you've filled in your brow shape, use a pair of slant-tip tweezers to remove any hairs that fall outside of the area.

Step Five: Clean Up Your Brows

Finally, use a spoolie eyebrow brush to brush through and blend the brow powder or pencil to soften it. Seal your brows into place with a clear coat of brow gel, and (if needed) apply concealer to the edges using a makeup brush, in order to cover up any redness from tweezing and create the cleanest possible lines. Simply use the brush to apply a line of concealer just along the outside of the brow, and then use a makeup sponge or your finger to blend it in.

That's it! When in doubt, take a less-is-more approach to your brows; this ensures you don't change too much too soon and regret it. And if you're worried about shaping them on your own, find a local guru to wax or tweeze them into the right shape first, and then use the steps above to maintain them on your own.
