Skincare tools have almost become as essential as face creams and serums, but do they actually work? Well, it depends on what skincare tool you're using. Yes, there are some that are a pure gimmick, but then there are picks like jade rollers that actually live up to their claims for years — and in the jade roller's case, thousands of years.

What is a Jade Roller?

According to Dr. Jenelle Kim, certified herbalist, doctor of Chinese medicine, and product formulator, jade rollers are far from a new trend. She notes that they originated in China in the 17th century, and their properties are based in traditional Chinese medicine as part of beauty routines of ancient Chinese elites. “The jade stone, known as the ‘stone of heaven’ was treasured, because of its healing, calming, and beautifying properties,” she says.

Dr. Kim also says that there's a full laundry list of benefits to using a jade roller. Jade rollers help work the tissues of the face to move blood circulation, relax muscles, and promote lymphatic drainage, which she says results in skin that is tighter, brighter, and more even in tone. “The massage helps to reactivate lymph circulation, which reduces puffiness, especially around the eyes,” says Dr. Kim. She also notes that jade rolling can help slow the process of aging by promoting cellular turnover, and can help your skincare products absorb deeper into the skin.

Tips for Using a Jade Roller

You're only going to see results if you know how to properly use a jade roller, and thankfully Dr. Kim has a few tips to share. First off, she recommends starting with a clean, dry face. Begin by applying your serum or moisturizer of choice, and then start by moving in a downward motion on the sides of the neck, along the sternocleidomastoid muscle. “This opens up the lymph prior to the massage,” says Dr. Kim.

Starting from the center of your forehead with the large end of the roller, Dr. Kim says to move the roller from your brow-line to the edge of your scalp, and continue working the roller from the center of your face outward as you move to your eyes, nose, and chin. “Use the smaller roller as you move around your eyes, and make sure to use light pressure,” says Dr. Kim. “Gradually apply slightly more pressure as you approach the outer edges of your face, paying special attention under the cheekbones and jawline.”

The Best Jade Rollers

What to Consider

First off, one of the biggest issues in the skincare industry is the cultural appropriation of ancient Chinese medicinal practices, which includes jade rollers. So, our main mission is to give back to the community that made these beautiful and effective pieces in the first place: each and every pick on this list is from an AAPI-owned brand in order to combat cultural appropriation in the beauty space.

Another note to keep in mind is to make sure your jade roller is actually made out of jade stone. Many cheaper facial rollers are made out of glass or plastic, which doesn’t last nearly as long as an authentic jade roller and won’t deliver as great results. So, make sure you do your research before purchasing a jade roller that's almost too bargain-friendly to believe. These are the best jade rollers worth buying today.

The smaller end is meant for the delicate contours around your eyes, while the spiked end penetrates deeper into the skin in a similar manner to microneedling, allowing your products to penetrate deeper into your skin.
