With over 1.5 million #shelfie posts on Instagram, beauty products went from something we bought for ourselves to objects designed to be displayed (and Insta’d). Other brands have always viewed themselves through the lens of art. La Prairie, for example.

At Art Basel in Switzerland, La Prairie had a presence at the fair’s Pavilion VIP Lounge, where the Swiss brand previewed their revamped Skin Caviar Luxe Cream—what they dub a masterpiece in skincare.

“We say it not to be boastful, but by the definition of the word ‘masterpiece,’” says Elizabeth Lamont, the Vice President of marketing of La Prairie. According to the folks at Merriam-Webster, that would be “a supreme intellectual or artistic achievement.”

In 1987, the brand truly did break the mold in beauty: They proved that caviar could be more than just a cocktail hour delicacy, but one of the most potent anti-aging ingredients in skincare. Since then, the Skin Caviar Collection been a staple among the most sophisticated customers’ shelves.

After years of study, the brand felt they were able to do one better. Now, the brand is finally able to tap into caviar’s full potential, which means we can expect a host of improved benefits. The Skin Caviar Luxe Cream delivers a significant lifting and tightening effect, increased elasticity, and softer, ultra-moisturized skin. (The same can be said of the Sheer version, as well as the Luxe Sleep Mask.)SHOP

One thing that hasn’t changed? The brand’s signature cobalt blue packaging. What could seem arbitrary is a symbol of the brand’s connections to the art world: That blue is actually an homage the late artist Niki de Saint Phalle. She used the color in much of her work, and one of her pieces, Pouf serpent bleu— colorful snake—loomed large in La Prairie pavilion at Art Basel.

“It’s the color of introspection,” says millennial artist Manon Wertenbroek, who also collaborated with La Prairie this year, and whose work was displayed at the exhibit. “[The color] is so deep, you get lost in it.”

A mini objet d’art, each jar is designed to delight, inspire, and of course, beautify. Newbie and experience collectors, the three remastered Skin Caviar products debuted on LaPrairie.com and in stories this month.
