Demi Lovato turns 23 today, but the Disney alum, who has been working in television and movies since age 7 when she landed a role on Barney & Friends, is a showbiz vet. She's currently working on her fifth studio album, the first from Safehouse Records, the label she created with Nick Jonas, and is riding the success of pop anthem "Cool For Summer," which reached number one on iTunes in 35 countries —plus it's nominated for an MTV Video Music Award. All of this is to say: The birthday girl is busy and rich AF. So when I catch her on the phone for a few moments, we jump right in...with skin, obviously.

Let's not forget, the clear-complexioned #nomakeupmonday enthusiast has a skincare line, Devonne by Demi Lovato that she uses twice a day. I ask her what makes her feel most beautiful, and she says: "Honestly, being makeup free." But how about on day two of her period, three pimples deep before a red carpet appearance? "As the face of Tampax and Always Radiant collection, when my skin isn't feeling great, I focus on something else." Fair enough.

But back to the big two-three. Can we expect a Kylie-style birthday tour? Last summer boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama surprised her with a "kid's birthday party" complete with an obstacle course, ponies, a food truck, and lots of friends. But this year, "I'm going to stay home and relax," she says. "That's pretty much all I want to do." Lovato loves, "Watching crime shows and Netflix in my sweatpants. Basically just keeping it really chill." 'Netflix and Chill,' got it.

For all of her laid-back confidence, Lovato has been vocal about her struggle with addiction, and she's now almost three-and-a-half years sober. "I have a phrase tattooed on the tops of my feet that says, 'Let go and let God.' That's the phrase I like to live by," Lovato tells me before we hang up. "Also there's a Bible verse, Philippians 4:13 that says, 'I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.' That's another one that has helped me get through really tough times. And sometimes for fun I like to change Christ to coffee. Coffee can get me through things as well."
