Runway hair often falls into two separate camps: pretty and cool. But backstage at Rodarte, hair stylist Odile Gilbert found a way to marry the two, pairing metallic barrettes with matte, unfussy waves. "It's like you steal a little piece of a crown," said Gilbert, signaling a set of floral clips in brushed gold and silver. As for barrette placement: "It's about putting the barrette on the texture the way the girl would do it, and not over-thinking it," she said. Rather than creating a uniform hair look, Gilbert rough-dried models' hair with Kérastase Spray à Porter, preserving the natural texture.
Girlish embellishment got an unfussy update at Oscar de la Renta, where hair guru Guido finished low, center-parted ponytails with loose slips of grosgrain ribbon that echoed Peter Copping's collection. Guido smoothed hair with a round brush before giving each model a "short center part" rather than splitting hair right in half, to give "a feeling of softness." As for how to tie a ribbon de la Renta style, you don't need a YouTube tutorial to get the look. "It's not like a bow," Guido said, creating loops that looked as though they might slip right out on the runway. Don't over-think it.
