Recently, Leonardo DiCaprio did the world a huge favor by shaving his scraggly beard and snipping his man bun. Sure, the look may have been for a part, but going clean-cut was a welcome change — and probably a healthy one, as the man bun might have been doing serious damage to his scalp.

Mic reports that doctors are warning that the trendy man bun (popularized by Jared Leto, who has also gone short recently) is leading to early hair loss in men across the country. It creates a condition called traction alopecia, which leads to baldness near the temples and forehead. If a guy slicks back his man bun tightly, he could be putting unnatural pressure on his hair, leading to the baldness. The same thing can happen to women with too-tight ponytails, weaves, or braids.

According to The Independent, the condition might go unnoticed for a while, but then bald spots start to appear and it's too late to bring the hair back. The hairs at the front of your head feel the most tension when you pull your hair back tightly, and that's why they're the first to fall out.

Luckily, most man-bun wearers don't get traction alopecia, but it's definitely a concern for guys who are new to this whole long hair thing. To prevent it, make sure your hair is tied back loosely, not tightly. Anyone who's worried about it should consult a dermatologist, who can properly diagnose the condition and figure out a treatment plan.
