When you drop cash on that perfect shade of lipstick, the last thing you want to see is the color bleeding onto the outside of your mouth throughout the day. Enter your new secret weapon: lip liner. Applying it can be a little tricky, but once you see what a difference lip liner makes to the staying power of your lipstick, you'll be totally hooked.

"Using a pencil under your lipstick gives you a super-saturated, long-wearing look," says Laramie, makeup artist and founder of Book Your Look. Her three big pro tips for lip liner newbies:

1. Sharpen your pencil first. Otherwise, you won't get the even, precise line you're looking for.

2. Pick a color that matches your lipstick. Don't just hastily choose any old shade — Laramie warns that the undertones must be the same, so simply picking a red lip liner to go under a red lipstick isn't enough. If you use a true blue red lipstick, like Ruby Woo, with an orange-y red lip liner, the results won't be pretty.

3. Go easy on the corners. Using an extra small Q-tip, softly blend your lip liner at the outer corners of your lips to avoid it looking too harsh.
