When makeup artist Val Garland was asked why she reached for M.A.C Chromaline in Hi-Def Cyan and Landscape Green to create graphic "bolts" of color across models' lash lines at Monique Lhuillier, she replied: "Because it suits everybody—it's two of those colors that predominantly work on every skin tone." Pat McGrath drove home a similar message at DVF, applying the universally flattering hues in high-shine, metallic shadow to the designer's diverse cast—which included supermodels such as Karlie Kloss, Jourdan Dunn, Lily Aldridge, and Irina Shayk.

Inspired by an editorial that McGrath shot with Steven Meisel and Sophie Dahl, as well as a photo of Von Furstenberg attending the opening of Studio 54 (the first time the fashion icon wore her hair curly), the backstage pro made the '70s vibe feel thoroughly modern by rimming eyes with aquamarine pigment and a damp brush to produce a vibrant sheen reminiscent of a "butterfly wing." Next, she washed over the lids and lower lashes with a lustrous shade of seafoam, going back in again with the blue to "define the eye," she explained. Multiple lashings of inky mascara completed the look.

While McGrath played up the unapologetic glamour of von Furstenberg's lamé romper (worn by Lindsey Wixson) and intricately embroidered, full-length finale gown (seen on Gigi Hadid), Garland's goal was to inject a feeling of freshness into Lhuillier's made-for-the-red-carpet collection: "When you're younger, you tend to be a lot more brazen, so I was thinking, how do we portray youth in makeup?" she said. "It's bolder; it's brasher; you take risks—that's why I went for chunky, clunky, thick liner." She also skipped mascara, noting that the second you bulk up lashes, "it suddenly becomes a lot more grown-up."

For those who aren't willing to trade in their basic black liner for a Crayola color or swap out neutral shadows for disco-worthy lids, we suggest adopting the trend on your fingertips with a strategic stripe of green (like Morgan Taylor Lacquer in Later Alligator) or blue. Polish pro Gina Edwards made a brave statement at Monique Lhuillier, saying: "I know some of you are like, 'Oh, a French manicure?' Yes. It's happening, girls."
