Before 2015 began, we thought we knew every hair trick in the book. Turns out, there are always new and brilliant ways to up condition, boost volume, and simplify styles. We're talking Kendall Jenner's tousling secret and Suki Waterhouse's fizzy root enhancer.

So, without further ado, here are the hair tricks that have rocked our roots this year. And here's to finding even weirder ways to improve our locks in 2016!

1. Plop for perfect curls.

It's not a new technique, but hair plopping has been extra buzz-worthy this year for creating perfect curls without the need for heat. In a nutshell, you "plop" wet curls wrapped in a towel or T-shirt on top of your head, twist both sides securely, and leave in while your hair completely dries.

The frizz-free, defined results are so impressive that YouTube is rife with how-to videos — many of them mere seconds long, because it's so easy to do. Fancy hopping on the plopping bandwagon? We tried it using nothing more than a T-shirt. Bargain.

2. Try the kinder way to backcomb roots.

We picked up many a tip from top hairdressers throughout the year, and one that really stuck with the fine haired amongst us came from Errol Douglas. We discussed with him the benefits of backcombing (volume) versus the big downfalls (damage), and he came up with an easy solution that won't ravage your strands.

Douglas introduced us to "fingercombing," which requires "using your fingertips in the same way you would use brush bristles to tease sections of hair at the roots". The best part is, we can do it anywhere at any time.

3. Tousle tresses like Kendall Jenner.

Leave it to Kendall Jenner and her naturally straight hair to teach us how to tousle with aplomb, using her tried and true technique. In November, she shared a how-to on her website using the tricks she's learnt backstage — and boy do they work. Our longed-for beachy waves have never looked better.

After washing her hair, Kendall mists on the cult classic Bumble & bumble Surf Spray, then blow-dried it in to create an airy canvas. She follows with a texturizing mist (Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, to be precise) and spends a moment massaging it into her scalp.

For her final trick, Kendall pins her lengths into a low bun for 10 minutes, gives it a good scrunch, then lets it loose for the dreamiest, easiest waves in Hollywood. Thanks.

4. Have your highlights done on a table.

Bear with us here. Having your highlights done on a table might sound a touch gimmicky, but stylist KL Christofferson discovered it creates the most multidimensional color.

The official term is "fluid hair painting," and it sees lengths sprawled on a flat surface, before the color of your choice is painted free-hand through random strands. The result? Some of the most stunning sun-kissed and rainbow dye jobs we've ever seen.

5. Create body with Coca Cola.

Thank Suki Waterhouse for this fizzy hair hack. The model revealed to Us Weekly that she washes her locks with Coca Cola to give her 'do extra guts. "I rinse my hair with Coca-Cola sometimes," she said. "I don't like my hair when it's washed — it's fine and limp — but Coca-Cola makes it tousled, like I've gone through the Amazon or something."

Amazon, fridge … same thing, right?

6. Use an iron for hair hydration.

When Lupita Nyong'o paid homage to her hairstylist Vernon François on Instagram, she dropped an emergency hack for pumping her hair with hydration.

The actress forgot her spray bottle while glamping on safari, so Vernon stepped in with a steam iron — which is much less scary than it sounds. Far from heating the plate and pressing it on Lupita's locks, he simply used it to mist some water on. "#dontturniton," she helpfully captioned the clip.
