"Last August I was sitting on my couch scrolling through Instagram—literally all I ever do —when I saw what I thought was a juice cleanse advertisement, but was actually a complete parody making fun of basic girls who bombard you with healthy eating diet tea products and endorsements," says Australian visual artist Carolyn Duchene. "I was laughing so uncontrollably at the accuracy of the meme that my dog was concerned. I started thinking of all the ways that people annoy me and how I could turn these irritating, awkward, and uncomfortable situations into satirical comedy." Duchene's Instagram page features a daily mix of original memes, obscure reposts, rare Shiba dogs, and fresh beauty looks that set her apart from the memer masses.

"The game-changer for me was the one coolest mentor and friend I ever had, the incredible meme genius @trevso_electric, who sadly passed away last October. I sent him a design I made—a pair of panties made out of all the annoying things fuckboys text girls—and he loved it and reposted it, and I started designing more funny products and memes and my account blew up shortly after that," she says. "He was a huge inspiration to me and helped lift my Instagram meme game to psychotic levels." Here, Duchene, whose Instagram is currently tipping towards the 50,000 follower mark, talks celebrity followers, double-process hair, and Instagram's least likable post.

Do you have an Instagram clique?

Definitely. There's a tight circle of awesome individuals who post the weirdest shit I have ever come across and I love them to death. We DM each other strange things we've seen IRL and meme ideas, and also have really deep chats about life. It's a great emotional support network. There are so many, but my favorite Internet comedians include @tank.sinatra, @mo_wad, @sonny5ideup, @iamsloanesteel, @ohalenoo, @idroppedthescrewinthetuna, @shopjeen, @gabriel_held, @doctor_nora_ and @browncardigan.

What's the weirdest DM you've ever received?

Oh my God people are so weird. There are a lot of weird dick pics with no explanation, and things that could be dicks but also could be pet animals. A lot of people send me pictures of their mom for no reason. The best DM I ever received was from a guy who was actually in one of the stock photos I made a meme out of. Turns out he was a model for hundreds of stock photos about five years ago, and his friends tagged him in the meme. He was pissing himself laughing. I didn't know people in stock photos were actually real live people, it was so funny.

Do celebrities featured on your page ever like their own memes?

It's hard to tell if a celebrity has liked a meme, because I don't scroll through the likes. But my memes have been reposted by my favs Miley Cyrus, Joe Jonas, and Sky Ferreira. It's so cool to make them laugh—they're so talented. Skye's been a devoted follower for a while. I love her.

Is being a makeup artist your side hustle?

I thrive on procrastination and part of that is doing extensive makeup looks and playing around with all the beautiful useless products I buy when I go to the drugstore for deodorant. I love drawing in my eyebrows and doing winged eyeliner. I also love contouring and highlighting because it is so cool to transform your face. I have a baby face and it's cool to make it fancy. I think makeup is an art form and so much fun. My favorite makeup artist on Insta is @katedevlin, she does some really cool looks and takes the hottest selfies.

What are the lip colors we're seeing on your account?

Oh I love pink. Pink is the best color. I currently switch between Chi Chi's Bimbo matte lipstick and M.A.C's bright plum matte, then I put a Revlon gloss over the top.

Who does your blonde?

I actually did it myself! I bleached it and toned it at home. Firstly I made sure my hair was strong enough to be bleached by using b3 Brazilian Bond Builder—what Kim Kardashian used when she went blonde—and then I mixed the bleach at home using cream developer and bleach powder, applied it to my hair, which is a dark blonde naturally, and washed it off after twenty minutes. I then used a light violet silver toner which I left in for half an hour, then I rinsed that out and applied a ton of L'Oréal purple shampoo—the best stuff—and left that in for about eight minutes otherwise my hair would turn purple! And rinsed that out, applied a deep hydration moisture mask for ten minutes then washed it all out and voilà— White-blonde hair of my dreams! My blonde inspiration is my cool photographer friend @ladydrewniak, who has literally the best hair and makeup 24/7. I love that silvery white look so much.

Are any of your nail looks DIY?

I do my nails myself usually, with the absolute sickest colors from @trustfundbeauty. I'm obsessed. They have the best range of pinks and glitters, with names like 'Bye Felicia,' 'Boy Tears,' and 'Hungover & Pretty.' My nail inspiration is always my stunning friend, celebrity nail artist @stephstonenails, who is AMAZING. Nail polish is like candy to me. I also have this cool 24K gold topcoat from OPI that I use over tiny little nail decals I find online. It's so fun and makes me feel fly.

What's your most-liked post ever?

I think it is a meme I made with a cat hugging onto a lady, a photo my friend sent to me, with the caption 'when u love her deeply but the relationship won't work because she is a peoples and you is a kitty.' It currently has about 20,000 likes. Sometimes you'll think a post will blow up and no one likes it, other times it will be a 'hmm, this is sort of funny' and it will explode. Basically, something that is as relatable to the most people as possible, using a situation that is very common and very awkward, usually to do with cats, dogs, alcohol, relationships, or sex.

Would you ever delete a fail?

Oh, I delete stuff all the time. I have like, ten mini identity crises each day. Often I'll think something is so fucking hilarious and will die laughing and then five minutes later I'll look at it again and think 'wow… that really isn't funny at all.' Something that won't be funny to one person will have another peeing their pants. The Internet is unpredictable and scary and incredible.

And what about a major fail that would lose you 1k followers. Does that ever happen? What do your followers hate?

That's never happened to me, but I can guarantee it would happen if I did an experiment and only posted photos of my Starbucks latte for 30 days straight, or like, everything I ate for a week. People generally follow for comedy content and cool stuff, anything else and they usually kind of ignore it.

What makes you cringe? What should seriously just die in 2016?

So, so, so many things. My cringe muscles are sore. Fedoras. Veganism. Vape pens. The word 'squad.' The term 'Netflix and Chill.' That was only funny for about a week in September last year. People who text back 'haha' to something way funnier than a 'haha.' Like um excuse me… That deserves a 'HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.' The word 'fuckboy.' People who watermark their memes. The list goes on.

What makes you laugh uncontrollably?

Weird stuff. I die at funny dogs and cats. I love shiba dogs. I follow all the shiba dog accounts. I just think they are so funny. @marutaro is my favorite. I also lose my shit every time at that Randall guy on Youtube who narrates nature documentaries like The Honey Badger. I'm basically a12-year-old boy.

If you could work with ANY brand, who would it be?

Moschino. I'm obsessed. I love pink. Versace. I have all their fragrance bottles they're so beautiful. I love shiny pretty stuff. I started working with an amazing eyewear company, @supasundays, that make the coolest reflective sunglasses. I'm seriously infatuated.
