Makeup guru François Nars created six variations of the New York underground punk woman. Unlike many ready-to-wear beauty looks, the makeup at Marc Jacobs wasn't designed with a product launch in mind. "We're not selling cosmetics in a very traditional way. It's more like creating a painting. It's the idea that the girls did it themselves, so it's not perfectly precise." And what's more punk than that?

The Kit: Filibuste Velvet Shadow Stick, Black Moon Velvet Eyeliner, Minorque Kohliner, Triple X Lip Gloss, Pandora Duo Eye Shadow, Sycorax Dual-Intensity Eye Shadow, all by NARS.

"We're applying the lipstick, and then with tissue and loose powder, we're going over it to make it super, super matte," said makeup artist Diane Kendall who gave six chosen models mega-bright matte red lips.

"We're doing ethereal but tough girls," said makeup artist James Kaliardos, who paired deep burgundy lips with dark, brushed-up brows. "They have this magical toughness to them." For an extra flash of bad girl magic, Kaliardos traced the inner waterline with iridescent white liner. "It gives you a little lift. Often the waterline is red and irritated." Hair stylist Odile Gilbert embellished matte, unfussy hair with live orchids flown in from California.

Makeup guru Pat McGrath paired soft glimmering lids with flushed cheeks and rosy lips.

"In the '70s women who had curls embraced them," said hair guru Orlando Pita, who looked to Shelley Duvall, Angela Davis, a Scarface-era Michelle Pfeiffer, and DVF herself for inspiration. Pat McGrath interpreted the disco look with softly smoked eyes and flushed cheeks. "Brown pencil smudged under the eye and in the eye socket, and tons of mascara. Highlighter on the lids, cheekbones, blush on the cheeks," she said. "It's not super, super perfect."

"It's this idea of travel, speed, motion, and transformation," said makeup artist Yadim, who gave a handful of models' futuristic flashes of glitter using moisturizer as an adhesive.

Eight chosen models got "psychedelic eyes," but no two eye art designs were the same. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux etched asymmetrical black lines and kept the rest of the face bare. "The tutorials show women how to wear tons of makeup and all the fashion shows are no makeup. Or if there's makeup, it's one look."

Two models punctuated an otherwise neutral lineup with crimson lips. For the rich blood shade, McGrath mixed Max Factor Marilyn Monroe Lipstick in Sunset Red and Lipfinity Long Lasting Lipstick in Always Elegant. Guido swept the hair back into a slick ponytail secured at the nape of the neck adding movement to the lengths with a medium curling wand.

Inspired by gang culture, makeup artist Inge Grognard gave the models' inky negative space brow cuts by painting over natural eyebrows with jet black eye liner.

This season's iteration of the Wang raver girl wore ruddy eye shadow and mascara-free lashes. "She's been up all night partying," said Kendall who offset hangover eyes with warm cheeks, and for some models, bleached brows.

Hair stylist Odile Gilbert pulled hair back into a low ponytail and secured with an elastic before misting all over with hairspray. Next, she wrapped the length of the ponytail with velvet ribbon, crisscrossing down the hair and tying it at the bottom.

What to do when the directive at Jason Wu is oxymoronic grungy elegance? For Yadim, it meant punk rock lashes paired with an innocent (or maybe it's guilty) flush. Yadim used just the tip of the Maybelline The Colossal Spider Effect Mascara ("It picks up a lot of extra product") wand to apply loads of the thick, inky formula to just the ends of the lashes so they bunched together and formed four or five mega-lashes. Then when the girls were in the line up, he applied Lip Studio Shine Shot Glassy Topcoat to the very tips of lashes to get a "vinyl, drippy, shiny" finish.

Makeup artist Val Garland's new red is ultra-rich and slightly glossed.

The seven layer cake of lips, this crimson color is the product of more than a dozen NARS shades. The braids aren't a Kim K reference. "They showed me pictures of Snoop Dogg and I loved his hair," explains hair stylist Anthony Turner, who smoothed braids with Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine. "I haven't got a problem with the Kardashians. My eyes just don't go there; they go to the street."
