Which NYFW Fall 2016 Beauty Look Are You?

Goth lips and rave sparkles or après-ski skin and prim braids? Take your pick.

At NYFW there was almost a line drawn in the sand when it came to beauty. Sweet or salty? Beauty or badass? In one corner we had the outsiders: goths, punks, and all the girls who refused to play nice. The other side consisted of the good girls, who were more traditionally pretty and polished. Which side would you pick?

Buzz Off

No hair, don't care was sort of the motto this season. Hedi Slimane muse Ruth Bell, who shaved her head partly to differentiate herself from her identical twin, May, was joined by similarly sheared Kris Gottschalk, Grace Bol, Soekie Gravenhorst, and Ajak Deng, among others. Without a curtain of hair, all you focus on is their faces―and while the cut is traditionally tough, these ladies made it seem more approachable.

The Outsiders

Those awesomely unique kids that existed on the periphery in high school and didn't give a f*ck what anyone else thought turned out to be amazing muses. Those Alice Cooper-worshipping Goths with their blackened lips and sooty eyes turned up at Marc Jacobs thanks to Francois Nars. And ravers made their way down the Alexander Wang runway with the reddened, party-weary eyes relieved of their eyebrows, along with matted down hair and the occasional baby bang. Rodarte offered up an army of cool girls with plum-painted lips by James Kaliardos that looked like they might just collectively kick your ass if you looked at them the wrong way.

Spark it Up

Sparkles get a bad rap. Sure they can be pretty and girly and basic but they can also be badass. And so sparkles were partly redeemed this season. Seemingly random daubs of glitter were placed on models' faces at Opening Ceremony by Yadim and crew, implying they had let a small child treat their faces like a pre-school art project. Childlike application was seen at Rosie Assoulin, where a myriad of bright hues encircled models' eyes. Gato accented graphic eyes with a sliver of silver glitter at Marissa Webb. Also crafty, were shiny shapes glued onto models like face jewelry: silver stars at Jeremy Scott and rhinestone teardrops beneath lower lash lines at Tome.

Makeup artists got very creative when wielding a simple black liner, eschewing the classic cat eye or even tight-lined lid, with something more conceptual. What is more nonconformist than drawing outside the lines? At Altuzarra, Tom Pecheux sketched random streaks that sometimes resembled barbed wire in the vicinity of the eyes. Cartoonish, modish lashes were illustrated on lids by Pat McGrath at Anna Sui. Meanwhile, Dick Page accented lids with a painterly smudge of free-floating black liner at Narciso Rodriguez.

Clean Plaits

Braids suggest an innocence of youth or at least some measure of virtuousness (well, perhaps not the Snoop Dogg-inspired pigtails at Creatures of the Wind). At Mansur Gavriel, Laurent Philippon weaved strands into posh-looking plaits before sweetly tying them with a bow and twisted pigtails into neat knots. Sleek, perfect pigtails were fashioned by James Pecis at Sally LaPointe, while slightly askew ones showed up at Ulla Johnson. The bedhead version of a braid took a turn at Sally Liang and Rebecca Minkoff.

Well Red

It's probably not accurate to categorize red lips as a trend as it's pretty much the most classic look there is and is perpetually on the runways. But this season's opaque, mostly matte version is for put-together women who won't be smearing their lipstick doing naughty things like making out or eating greasy foods or drinking heavily. Val Garland painted a creamy cherry on at Cushnie et Ochs. Of course, posh Victoria Beckham went with a classic rich lady look—crimson lips and not much else, dreamed up by Pat McGrath. Naeem Khan makes intricate gowns for wealthy women and the red lipstick on the models wearing said designs was aptly opulent. Even Proenza Schouler, a show we can usually count on for a low-key look, went for a matte scarlet mouth.

Top Tails

Low, super sleek ponytails scream nice girl with possibly a touch of OCD. No hair will escape the clutches of this perfection seeker. James Pecis imparted his precision ponies with mirror-like shine at Yigal Azrouël. And at Victoria Beckham, the perfection extended from the flawless lip to the sculpted ponytails, scraped back by Guido Palau. The red lip-pony combo was also present at Proenza Schouler as a razor sharp, deep side part punctuated the glossy "athleisure" version. At Suno, Odile Gilbert encased the skinny ponytails in velvet ribbon. The velvet ribbon made another appearance at Kate Spade, where Bob Recine used it to polish off a low-slung, middle-parted pony.

Sporty Spice

Those who enjoy high-end leisure activities might have seen a little of themselves on the runways. Not surprisingly, Tory Burch, a brand loved by ladies-who-lunch, asked her glam team to look to equestrian style as inspiration, and for Diane Kendal that meant a fresh-faced glow. At Zero + Maria Cornejo, Dick Page faked a post-piste wind-burnt effect that spread across cheeks and over the bridge of the nose. That snow bunny flush also spread across the faces of models at Jason Wu and Suno. While at Jonathon Simkai, models' lashes looked as if they were embellished with fresh snowflakes.
