Rather than succumb to winter-induced hair hibernation, why not spring forward with a fresh look? A look that's simultaneously brand new and a blast from the past? Clayton Hawkins, celebrity hairstylist to cool girls Awkwafina, Laura Harrier, and Elizabeth Olsen, played fortune teller for ELLE.com and predicted the biggest hair trends for spring. In his magic ball, he saw icons Cher, Twiggy, Sophia Loren, and of course, Drew Barrymore circa 1997. Take a lesson from the beauty greats of the past, ahead.

Flower Power

"The chicest (and most affordable!) hair accessory you can wear this spring are natural flowers! Think less Coachella flower crown circa 2013 and more Drew Barrymore circa 1997," explains Hawkins. "Pick up a bouquet of your favorite flowers at Trader Joe’s and secure with a bobby pin corresponding to your hair color." Hawkins recommends using two to four flowers as less is more. But, if you’re going to put fresh flowers in your hair (as seen at Rodarte's Spring 2019 show, left), you do you! Solange would very much approve.

Warm It Up

Embrace warm tones. For years, Hawkins' clients were rocking icy and ashy tones in their hair but there has been a sudden shift the past couple of months. "Buttery blondes and auburn brunettes are popping up everywhere and spoiler alert; they actually tend to flatter most skin tones better than cool colors," says Hawkins. "Next time you get your hair colored, give it a shot and warm it up!" Sophia Loren, is that you?

Cher Hair

This spring, it's all about glossy hair and getting that Cher-inspired ultra-wet shine. "If your hair has been colored, rock a leave-in conditioner all day and slick your hair back into a snatched ponytail or a sleek bun," says Hawkins. " You’ll be nourishing your hair and turning a look!"

If you've been processing your hair for a little too long, it's time for a fresh start. "Stars like Michelle Williams and Kristen Stewart have long proved that short hair can be versatile, fun, and sexy!," explains Hawkins. "But, be sure to ask your stylist to go with one that most flatters your face shape." Maybe that hair is weighing you dow—go for it and take a chance. There could be an icon underneath all that length.
