5 Easy Ways to Summer-ify Your Beauty Routine

Summer is officially here. That's cool and all, but warm weather also requires a whole new beauty arsenal. Got to protect yourself with SPF from the devilish UV rays, tame the frizz (or tamp it down as much as possible), and get your body right. We rounded up some of the latest head-to-toe essentials to stock up on ASAP.

Switch to Mineral Sunscreen

If you're already a convert to mineral makeup, you get the appeal of the earthly ingredients. "They are ideal for those with sensitive skin because their UV-filter ingredients, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, don't cause stinging or burning," confirms Miami-based dermatologist Leslie Baumann. "They're also great for people who try to avoid putting chemicals and synthetic ingredients in and on their bodies." While old-school mineral options tended to be heavy and left behind a telltale white sheen, the newest formulas are lightweight and nearly invisible. Proof positive of this is the lightweight milky texture of Clinique's new SPF 50 Mineral Fluid for Face ($26). For body, there is MDSolarSciences Mineral Moisture Defense Body Broad Spectrum SPF 50 UVA-UVB Sunscreen that also repairs any sun damage that's already done with a trio of antioxidants ($39). If you're planning to make contact with the water or engage in any sports, consider a very water-resistant option, like Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion WetForce for Sensitive Skin & Children Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ ($42), which features a technology that boosts its UV ray repelling powers when it gets wet or sweaty.

Prep Your Face

It can't hurt to double down on protection so before you apply your makeup, or in place of it if you're going for a more minimal approach, slather on an SPF-spiked primer like the shine killing Prime & Protect Mattifying Primer by Cane + Austin ($56), imperfection disguising Insta filter-like Murad Invisblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($80), or color-adaptive BareMinerals Prep Step Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Mineral Shield Daily Prep Lotion ($30). Stash them in your bag for mid-day IRL face tuning.

Protect Your Mouth

While you're concerning yourself with slathering sunscreen on every inch of your face and body, you've probably been guilty of neglecting your mouth. But that skin is thinner and more susceptible to UV damage so consider setting aside your Kylie Lip Kit, at least while the sun is shining, and get yourself a lip tint with SPF. The best formulas provide the color of a gloss with the care of a balm, like the sheer Ilia Tinted Lip Conditioner with SPF 15 ($26) that's packed with softening cocoa and shea butters and antioxidants, Vitamin E infused Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Lip Protectant Stick Sheer Tint Sunscreen SPF 15 ($21), or from suncare specialist Coola there's water-resistant, pool party perfect Tinted Mineral Liplux SPF 30 ($18).

Heat-Proof Your Hair

This season you really don't want to see your halo, likely formed by a mass of errant hairs. There's also the issue of putting the heat tools down because it's already hot AF. Your best bet is to keep the frizz-fighting formulas, like Madam CJ Walker Beauty Culture Coconut & Moringa Oils Curl Refresher Mist ($26), an all-day, any-day texture revitalizer that uses coconut, sunflower and moringa oils to block humidity and add shine. When you've smartly chosen the air-dry method, smooth Oribe AirStyle Flexible Finish Cream ($42) through hair and the next day for the cool girl, lived-in look you know you're not over. And then give your strands the TLC they so desperately need when being beaten down by sun, seawater, and sweat, by slathering on UV-protecting, damage-preventing Alterna Bamboo Beach BB Beach Balm for Hair ($22).

Get Bikini Smooth

You've been cramming in the workouts to get bikini bodied but there's still work to be done. You can start by ridding yourself of the rough bits in the shower with Kopari Coconut Crush Scrub ($28) that true to its name contains everyone's favorite wonder ingredient, coconut, along with brown sugar to buff your body to a glowing, baby butt soft finish. While you can help camouflage cellulite and other imperfections with self-tanner, say you've never been able to apply sans streaks, there's nearly foolproof temporary body makeup, like the imperfection blurring Vita Liberata Body Blur Instant Skin Finish ($45). And if you're cool with strobing, why not try body strobing on your overexposed legs with This Works Perfect Legs Sculpt & Shine ($52), a highlighter that does for your thighs, what face illuminator does for your cheekbones.
