Call us crazy, but straighteners and hot hair tools could use an upgrade. Don't you just wish that straightening your hair were as easy and mundane as, well ... brushing your hair?
Well, now it is, thanks to the innovative hair straightening brushes that are popping up. Some of you may be skeptical about gliding a hot brush through your hair, but trust us — once you try one of these brushes out, you'll break up with your flat irons, hair dryers, and curling irons for good.
The Best Hair Straightening Brushes
What is a Hair Straightening Brush?
According to hairstylist Jenna Spino of Maxine Salon, a hair straightening brush is a heated brush, similar to a blow dry brush but it’s used on dry hair to smooth and works more like a flat iron than a blow dryer. Although hair straightening brushes won’t give you the sleek look of a flat iron, they’re excellent for smoothing out your hair and frizz. She says they couldn’t be easier to use because you’re just brushing your hair in smaller sections to get a nice blowout effect minus any real effort.
What to Consider
Here, Spino breaks down the key factors to look out for when shopping for hair straightening brushes:
Temperature
Ideally, your hair straightening brush sports a digital temperature control. Hot tools can safely go up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit without damaging your tresses, but you don't have to crank up the heat that high unless you have thick, curly, or coily hair. Spino advises those with straight, wavy, and fine hair to lower the temperature to create beautiful smooth hair, minus the potential heat damage.
Your Hair Length and Fullness
Like with all haircare and styling products, different hair types will require heat settings and brush sizes. “Fine hair should be set to a lower heat setting than someone with thicker or curlier hair. Hair that is dense will need a bigger brush. If your hair needs more smoothing, look for a brush with bristles that can get close to the root,” explains Spino.
Bristles and Brush Size
Speaking of bristles, make sure the bristles are securely planted to the brush to avoid unnecessary pulling and damage. Spino suggests using hair straightening brushes with ceramic coating to avoid snagging your hair.
You should also pick the right size brush for your styling needs. The Chicago-based hairstylist says smaller hair straightening brushes, including InStyler Straight Up Ceramic Straightening Brush, target frizz-prone areas around the hairline or for finer hair types. Anyone with long or thicker hair can use medium-to-large hair straightening brushes, such as Conair INFINITIPRO Diamond-Infused Ceramic Smoothing Hot Brush and Revlon Salon One Step XL Straightening Heated Hair Brush.
Technology
Dealing with frizzy hair? Spino says ionic technology, found in the Drybar Brush Crush Heated Straightening Brush, is your new BFF for reducing frizz. The only caveat: If you don't have frizzy hair and use any hot tool equipped with ionic tech you'll actually create frizzy hair. Don't worry: MiroPure Enhanced Hair Straightener Brush does not have ionic technology.
