Fashion's biggest night has arrived, this time to honor the opening of Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between. In keeping with Kawakubo's flair for inventive silhouettes and looks that challenge conventions of size and scale, our best dressed honorees embraced the night's overall theme in unexpected ways. Here, our top picks from the Met Gala 2017 red carpet.
Rihanna
What: Commes des Garçons and jewelry by Rihanna Loves Chopard, Le Vian and DVANI jewelry.
Why: Rihanna is always one to dress in theme, and won the night as one of the only attendees to wear the honored designer. We were looking out for her to one-up the infamous Guo Pei look she donned to the 2015 Met's China: Through the Looking Glass red carpet–and the style star came correct.
Priyanka Chopra
What: Ralph Lauren Collection and Jennifer Fisher earrings.
Why: Chopra elevated the oh-so-classic trench to new heights–and lengths.
Zendaya
What: Dolce & Gabbana and Forevermark jewelry
Why: The actress made an all-over tropical print, full ball skirt and mussed afro feel effortless.
Lily Collins
What: Giambattista Valli Haute Couture
Why: The starlet tapped into her dark side and showed off an edge to her girly style.
Gigi Hadid
What: Tommy Hilfiger
Why: We expected a super sexy look from Hadid, and she delivered–but with an avant garde edge.
Cara Delevigne
What: Chanel Haute Couture
Why: The newly bald model and actress proved that a killer beauty look doesn't require long locks–and that she can do no wrong in sleek and sexy evening suiting.
Lily Rose Depp
What: Chanel Haute Couture
Why: The Chanel cosmetics and fragrance face brought some much needed color to the (blue and white) carpet.
Lily Alridge
What: Ralph Lauren Collection
Why: Aldridge stunned in a cutaway look and thigh-high boots that could not have felt fresher for her typically classic-meets-boho style.

What: Thom Browne
Why: The singer always opts for inventive takes on laid-back looks, breaks and rewrites fashion rules, and makes us want pieces we never thought we needed. Case in point: a sharp puffer coat with a train.
Lily James
What: Burberry
Why: The young actress' look felt equal parts darling and dark beauty–and wowed from every angle with a sharp shape and stark choker from the front, and an architectural black bow at the back. James earned points for pairing her classic-with-a-twist look with sleek hair and a bold, dark eye.
