Microneedling is one of our absolute favorite services to improve the texture and tone of aging skin. It's a bit trickier than your typical treatment if you're attempting this one at home, so we wanted to ensure that we learned all there is to know before we go puncturing our skin with a million tiny holes. (Yes, that's literally what we're doing here, folks!)

We realize this sounds a little intense, so we chatted with one of our favorite skincare experts, Kataryna Parciak, a medical aesthetician at La Suite at Union Square Laser Dermatology, to demystify this transformative treatment. "Microneedling therapy is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical and nonablative procedure for facial rejuvenation that involves the use of a microneedling device to create a controlled skin injury," she explained. "As each fine needle punctures the skin, it creates a channel, or micro-wound. The controlled injury triggers the body to fill these micro-wounds by producing new collagen and elastin."

The procedure reduces scars caused by acne, surgery, or thermal burns. It fades stretch marks, reduces fine lines and deep wrinkles, and tightens sagging skin. It's also a great procedure for hyper-pigmented skin. But who is a good candidate for this treatment?

"Almost every adult is a good candidate for this procedure. Microneedling is a good alternative to invasive treatments for people who want results without a long recovery period," Parciak said. "It works great with skin discolorations, wrinkles, or dull skin. Fine lines can be improved, and pigmentation issues lessened, with a series of micro-needling treatments."

Even though it's well-tolerated by most patients, dryness, scaling, redness, and swelling may occur after treatment. These effects could last for several days or longer, depending on the depth of penetration of the needles. To combat this, Parciak recommends moisturizers, antioxidants, and sunscreen post-treatment for several weeks.

Since some skin types can be sensitive, it's best to start slow with your at-home microneedling routine. "I would recommend starting once or twice a week and then working up to five times a week if the skin can tolerate it," she said. "Apply serum before and after rolling the skin for better penetrations to prevent any scratches."

She also let us know that it's very important to use good-quality rollers and skincare products, as you are introducing it deep into the skin. You should clean and sterilize the roller regularly to prevent infections and change it every 3 to 6 months.

Beauty Bioscience GloPRO Regeneration Tool

Beauty Bioscience GloPRO Regeneration Tool
$199 at Nordstrom$312 at Walmart$199 at QVC
Pros
  • Everything you need in a dermaroller
Cons

The GloPro tops our list because it truly offers the most. Created by former Miss Teen Texas and Beauty Bioscience founder Jamie O'Banion, the device's patented technology is complete with red LED-light functionality and VibroTactile stimulation.

Thanks to these features, volume is restored from the inside out, resulting in a plumper, more youthful-looking complexion. For maximum results, utilize this tool at least three times per week with moderate pressure for at least 1 minute to properly stimulate collagen production.

    Sdara Skincare Dermaroller

    Sdara Skincare Dermaroller
    Pros
    • Affordable
    • Free case
    Cons

This is Amazon’s pick for best dermaroller, and one of our favorites, too. It's affordable, effective, and can provide benefits similar to a more expensive in-office treatment. It also includes a free storage case to keep your dermaroller clean when not in use. What's not to love?

      Great for Beginners

Healthy Care Titanium Microneedle Derma Roller

Healthy Care Titanium Microneedle Derma Roller
      Pros
      • Affordable
      Cons

One of the perks of at-home treatments is that generally, in-office microneedling procedures can be costly, starting anywhere between $250 and $750. Healthy Care's derma roller falls short of $10, but keep in mind that cheap in price doesn't necessarily equate to cheap in quality.

The device is especially great for beginners, with a variety of needle sizes to experiment with. Users attest to its gentle feel, but do warn that redness is normal, but can be alleviated with hyaluronic acid and an ice mask.

        Environ Gold Roll-CIT

        Environ Gold Roll-CIT
        Pros
        • Effective and highly recommended
        Cons
        • Pricey

OK, we realize this one is a bit pricier than all others on our list, but there's a good reason for that.

"My favorite gold roller by Environ can last up to 5 years, but it depends on the frequency of use," Parciak told us. "Gold naturally suppresses bacteria — therefore, it might be a good idea to invest in a more expensive roller."

Don't want to take our word for it? We're not the only ones who love this fancy roller.

        Best Roller Alternative

        Nurse Jamie Beauty Stamp

         Nurse Jamie Beauty Stamp
        Pros
        • Easy to use
        Cons
        • Doesn't technically roll, but offers the same benefits

OK, this one doesn't exactly roll, but the idea is the same. Nurse Jamie's exfoliating tool follows the same format of causing micro-injuries. You just need to swap the rolling motion for a stamping pattern and you're good to glow.

        Best for Body

Skinmedix XL Micro Needle Roller 1.5 MM for Body

Skinmedix XL Micro Needle Roller 1.5 MM for Body
        Pros
        • Can be used on entire body
        Cons

Generally used for impurities like acne, acne scarring, and/or to stimulate natural collagen production on the face, derma rollers can be used anywhere on the body.

So what's the difference here? Skinmedix's Titanium Micro Needle Rollers offer a high-quality durability and are specifically designed for use on problem areas like acne-prone patches and stretch marks across the legs, stomach, and back.
