There are a few reasons dark circles appear along our lower lids, so while we can absolutely attribute the occasional shadow to long work days that turned into late — possibly boozy — nights, there may be other factors to consider if it becomes a recurring concern.

Dark circles are dilated blood vessels underneath the eye area, and can form as a result of sleep deprivation, alcohol, allergies, aging, or genetics. To reduce these dark marks, the first step would be to address probable cause. Note that similarly to how your skin might be more acne-prone than others, dealing with dark circles is personal; you have to find what works for you.

To eliminate some trial and error (maybe even some unnecessary spending?), we've consulted with six skin experts and makeup artists to find out what pros are using to address dark circles.

Mzia Shiman — Celebrity Esthetician

What they're using: DECLÉOR Aurabsolu Intense Glow for Eyes Dark Circle Corrector, $54 dermstore.com ; DECLÉOR Hydra Floral Anti-Pollution Hydrating Gel Cream, $70 dermstore.com

Why it works: "DECLÉOR Aurabsolu Intense Glow for Eyes Dark Circle Corrector is amazing. It contains jasmine for a beautiful brightening effect under the eye, and you can see a difference after just a few applications. Gel-based products are good for dark circles because gel helps to rejuvenate and hydrate the skin, such as DECLÉOR Hydra Floral Anti-Pollution Hydrating Gel Cream. Dark circles only look better when they're really hydrated, as this area tends to be very dry. Key point is, it's all about hydration — skin opens up and looks better when it's hydrated."

Pro Tip: "Don't use powder in this area for makeup. When people use powder it looks cakey, because powder is mattifying and dark circles are usually dry. If your go-to product is a powder, be sure to use a hydrating eye cream before application (such as DECLÉOR's Aurabsolu) as all makeup goes on better when the skin is prepped and hydrated."

What they're using: InstaNatural's Eye Serum, $17 amazon.com; InstaNatural's Eye Cream, $16 amazon.com; Tarte's Rainforest of the Sea Aquacealer Concealer, $26 sephora.com

Why it works: "I layer InstaNatural's Eye Serum, which is a concentrated blend of vitamin C and caffeine, along with InstaNatural's Eye Cream, which contains bisabolol, peptides, and a plethora of natural moisturizers. This combination tackles dark circles while also keeping my eyes firm and hydrated. Additionally, the combination layers well under concealer.

In addition, while I am passionate about treating the skin condition, leveraging a concealer to soften my dark circles is part of my daily routine. I prefer lightweight textures, so my go-to is Tarte's Rainforest of the Sea Aquacealer Concealer. It's a serum-like texture, which prevents it from appearing cakey; the coverage is natural and buildable, and it contains natural extracts that compliment my skin care regimen. While my darkness has reduced with the use of the right eye care, this concealer brightens my face and helps me look radiant and awake."

Pro Tip: "I've found that a combination of skin-energizing ingredients, along with increased hydration, have proven the most successful [to reduce dark circles]. My favorite ingredient for reducing darkness is caffeine, but combined with bisabolol, vitamin C, and peptides, the results are over-the-top."

Sharyn Laughlin — MD, Board-Certified Dermatologist (Canada and USA); Medical Director at Laserderm, Co-Founder of CyberDERM-The Sunscreen Company

What they're using: jane iredale Active Light Under Eye Concealer, $28 amazon.com; CyberDERM Emblica Light and Bright, $63 ahalife.com

Why it works: "jane iredale Active Light Under Eye Concealer is a great way to conceal darkness. It's a very light concealer that does not sink into the fine lines. It conceals, but it also gives the under-eye a bright appearance. I will generally recommend the cream used on your face for lower eyelid therapy.

For the discoloration, you can use something like a pigment-correction cream like CyberDERM's Emblica Light and Bright. However, keep in mind that the pigment might be related to congestion, in which case topical agents have limited benefit."

Pro Tip: "Any cream safe and non-irritant for the face can be used around the eyes and on the eyelids for a given therapeutic benefit. For instance, if you are on prescription retinoic acid for use on the face, then use it on your lower eyelids as well, not the upper eyelid — as any cream used in this skin fold is more likely to irritate."

Cynthia Rowland — Founder of Facial Magic

What they're using: Cell Renewal Eye Cream, $30 cynthiarowland.com; Cell Renewal Eye Repair w/ Rose Essential Oil, $40 cynthiarowland.com

Why it works: "Did you know that eye creams and treatments are to be applied using the ring finger? Our ring fingers were made to tackle the under-eye because the ring finger muscles are slight and cannot exert deep pressure under the eyes.

Our Cell Renewal Eye Treatment is ideal for all skin types. The light-diffusing minerals, such as mica, set up a glow under the eyes. This formula has green tea, CoQ10, and vitamin K to reduce puffiness and dark circles. Use it twice daily.

The Cell Renewal Eye Repair Cream is vastly different because this potent formula has 4% glycolic cream with rose essential oil. Rose essential oil is highly regarded in cosmetics. We recommend that it is used only at night, alternating with the Epidermal Growth Factor."

Pro Tip: "To enhance the under-eye, I recommend the following: Using the ring finger of your dominant hand, begin under the inner brow and continue outwards toward the outer brow, then downward under the eye and continue until a full circle has been completed around the upper and lower eye regions. Gently perform this 'exercise' about 100 times around each eye. Make certain your ring finger is well-lubricated so it glides effortlessly."

Susan Posnick — Makeup Artist and Founder of Susan Posnick Cosmetics

What they're using: COLORCORRECT by Susan Posnick Cosmetics, $22 dermstore.com

Why it works: "The double-sided creamy — but won't-settle-in-your-lines — pencil makes covering dark circles a breeze. It's very high in pigment, and the two shades on each pencil allow for perfect coverage and skin tone-matching. The correcting side on each of the four pencils contains yellow and/or orange to neutralize darkness and discoloration. There are four double-sided pencils to correct darkness and match skin tones from very light to very dark. COLORCORRECT is creamy so it goes on easily, but it never settles into lines. It is good for all skin types."

Kimberly Sampson — emerginC's Training Director

What they're using: emerginC Vitamin C Eye Serum, $55 dermstore.com; emerginC Lighten-Up Under-Eye Circle Fighter, $67 dermstore.com; emerginC Scientific Organics Eyelight Cream, $65 dermstore.com

Why it works: "The emerginC Vitamin C Eye Serum is a great eye serum with vitamin C for brightening. It also contains botanical extracts to help soothe and moisturize sun-damaged skin.

The emerginC Lightens Up Under-Eye Circle Fighter targets eye product for dark pigmentation formulated with advanced tri- and tetrapeptide HALOXYL that has been clinically proven to help firm and tone the under-eye while also eliminating blood deposits responsible for dark under-eye concerns.

Another option would be the emerginC's Scientific Organics Eyelight Cream. It is a natural (minimum 70% organic) anti-aging and moisturizing eye cream containing astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant for sun damage and pigmentation, and Derm SRC, a blend of bamboo silica, pea extract, and glucosamine HCI, which improve collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, resulting in a hydrated and brighter under-eye skin.

Bonus: emerginC's products also consist of the Revital-Eyes Mask, a cooling, hydrating, and brightening eye mask containing licorice root, arnica, cucumber, and minerals. emerginC Revital-Eyes Mask can be used one to three times a week prior to eye care to help reduce the appearance of under-eye puffiness, fatigue, and pigmentation."

Pro Tip: "When choosing eye products for dark circles, look for ingredients which help constrict dilated capillaries (responsible for dark circle pigmentation), promote lymphatic and blood flow from under-eye region, and brighten the eye area, such as astaxanthin, vitamin C, arnica, licorice, bearberry.
