By now, you've heard about the magic of dry shampoo. It can be used to absorb oil in greasy hair, extend the life of a blowout from the salon, or even add some grit and texture to elevate your style when using hot tools. We even love to apply it on clean hair to add some volume and oomph to limp locks!

The benefits are endless, and even our team of dry-shampoo experts continues to learn something new about our favorite hair product all the time. (For example, did you know that you're actually supposed to apply dry shampoo before you go to the gym? You're welcome!)

Take a peek at the video below to see our method in action! We also showcase three of the absolute best dry shampoos (Living Proof, Batiste, and Oribe) we discovered after 300 hours of testing. Seriously.

It's true that there's not technically a "correct" way to apply dry shampoo. You could totally flip your head over, then spray the dry shampoo haphazardly all over your hair, and it would probably still look good. (That's the power of dry shampoo!) But we're going to share the best way we've discovered to effectively apply dry shampoo for optimal results.

Our dry shampoo method can be broken down into three simple steps: section, spray, and shake.

Step 1: Section

Start out by brushing the hair completely to remove any tangles. Then, create your first section by slicing out a horizontal part in your hair right above the ear. These sections do not need to be exact! You can use your fingers for a quick fix, or grab a tail comb if you prefer to go the extra mile and make even sections.

Step 2: Spray

After making your first section, take the dry shampoo and spray along the horizontal point, about 2 to 3 inches from your scalp. Continue the pattern of parting sections, about an inch apart, and spraying until you've covered both sides of your head. You can choose to follow this format down the back of your head as well, but it may get tricky to reach. We've found that focusing on the area near the crown is sometimes the best approach, rather than trying to reach every last inch of the back of your head.

Step 3: Shake

This step can be adjusted, depending on your desired end result. We typically like to "shake" the dry shampoo into our hair, using our fingers to rapidly massage it into the scalp. If you shake it vigorously, it does give the hair more of a tousled, messy look. So, if you desire a sleeker style, you can skip the shake and brush the hair out with a paddle brush instead of using your fingers to distribute.

From this point, you can style further as desired. Adding curls with an easy automatic curling tool (like the Beachwaver!) is a super simple way to make hair look even fuller in a flash. The dry shampoo in your hair will provide a sturdy base, allowing your curls to last even longer than they typically would.
