People with curly and natural hair are all too familiar with frizzy hair. What Is a Hair Diffuser?

Chances are, you already have one of these nifty hair dryer attachments, and it's probably collecting dust in your room. But for those of you with wavy-to-coily hair types, it’s time to dust off your diffuser and put it to good use.

We spoke to Annagjid “Kee” Taylor, celebrity hairstylist to notable stars like Keke Palmer, Tika Sumpter, Tiffany Haddish, Nafessa Williams, and many more, about why exactly a diffuser is such an important haircare tool for curls. She tells us, “One of the main benefits of using a hair diffuser is to dry and set your hair, defining curls with minimal frizz.”

Since diffusers distribute airflow, it’s able to maximize coverage which, Taylor says, “is better and less damaging for your strands” than using a regular dryer or a concentrator nozzle that only flows in one concentrated direction. “The multidirectional airflow also gives your locks more volume and body,” she says.

    What to Consider

    Understand Your Natural Curl Pattern

Knowing your natural curl pattern will help you understand how your hair will turn out after using a diffuser. These attachments are meant to elevate your hair’s natural body and bends, so don’t expect ringlets when your hair naturally falls in subtle waves. Yes, you’ll see more volume and definition, but hair diffusers aren’t meant to do more than that.

Since there are quite a few hair types, finding yours can be difficult at first, but we have a nifty curl pattern guide for you to check out.

Assess How Long Your Hair Is

... Or rather, assess just much hair you have. Curly-haired people know that shrinkage makes your hair look much shorter than it actually is, plus curly hair is naturally more voluminous than finer, straighter hair types. The easiest rule of thumb to follow is that the more hair you have, or the longer your hair is, the bigger the diffuser you will need.

    How We Chose

Now that you’ve gotten the 411 on how to shop for a hair diffuser and why they’re so vital for getting those waves and curls tamed to perfection, check out a few of the most impressive, top-rated diffusers that internet reviewers (plus celebrity hairstylists) can’t get enough of. Our beauty editor, Nicole Saunders, also included her no-fail hair diffuser (Dyson Supersonic Diffuser), and it's totally worthy of your hard-earned money. Speaking of price tags, these hair diffusers cost $55 and under, so you can gift one to yourself and your loved ones, whether it's Valentine's Day, their birthday, or just because.

Believe us: Once you use one of these hair diffusers on your curls, you’re never going to air-dry ever again.

    Cons
    • You can't buy the diffuser seperately

Bed Head takes diffusing a step further with this innovative diffuser/dryer hybrid, earning it our best overall distinction. Instead of a separate attachment designed for use on a traditional hair dryer, this has everything you need in one handy tool.

It features three different heat settings, as well as two different speeds, so you can truly customize your styling session.

Amazon reviewers consider it their ride-or-die hair diffuser, too. “Best experience with a hair dryer diffuser. I always wanted to use a device that worked fast and effectively — and I found it! I love that it is not heavy to carry, its design will be very convenient for traveling, and my frizzy hair turned out spectacular,” says one 5-star review.

Perfect for both long and short hair, this diffuser features 110-plus air outlets to distribute heat and prevent damage. We love the deeper bowl, too, which allows the dryer to get a better grip on your hair, making your curls even more defined.

Amazon reviewers agree using this hair diffuser always levels up their haircare routine. “My curls are fuller and more defined, and my drying time is cut. I wish I had gotten one of these years ago instead of using the smaller ones that come with the hair dryers,” says one 5-star Amazon review.

This affordable hair diffuser is lightweight, easy to use, and can fit a wide range of blow dryers. But the best part is that it’s collapsible, making it the perfect travel companion. Plus, it comes with a convenient travel bag, so you can take it with you anywhere you please.

“Lightweight, and yet, when expanded, worked just as well as the bulky solid plastic one I use at home. Perhaps better as the entire piece heats up for a quicker dry time,” says one Amazon reviewer. They add it works nicely on their personal travel-sized hair dryer and hotel hair dryers abroad.

This weird beauty product looks similar to a chicken foot, but its unique design is tailor-made for curly hair. It's equipped with an impressive 360-degree airflow and a ceramic inner core that heats up quickly to ensure your hair dries fast AF. It also helps define your curls, add volume, and minimize frizzy hair.

“I love, love, love, LOVE this diffuser! The ‘fingers’ slip into areas of my hair around my head in ways that a traditional diffuser cannot. For example, I can slide it into the curls instead of just scrunching them. It gives me [a] great lift at the roots,” says one 5-star Amazon review.

BIO IONIC's hair diffuser will help you achieve frizz-free curls no matter your skill level. You're in control of your styling routine because this hair diffuser has a turn-dial where you can increase or lessen airflow at the center of the diffuser, depending on how dry you want your curls.

Amazon reviewers agree it fits a variety of hair dryers, including cheap Conairs, moderately priced Rusks, and pricey Dyson Supersonics and Drybar Buttercups.

For example, one Amazon reviewer didn’t want to spend upwards of $150 on a replacement hair dryer just because theirs was acting up. “I decided to try this, and it fits my dryer PERFECTLY. I also love that you can twist it to adjust the vents. My curls look amazing, and I’m so glad I purchased this,” says their 5-star review.

    • Skip if your motto is “big hair, don’t care”

One online reviewer with fine hair admits they recently lost some hair post-partum, but this hair diffuser helps camouflage their hair loss. “The diffuser really does the job of giving my hair lift and volume. You can’t even notice the hair I’ve lost, luckily, it wasn’t too much. I’m so glad I have this,” says their 5-star review.

Drybar knows a thing or two about proper heat styling. In addition to controlling airflow for properly defined curls, this one also cuts down on frizz and boosts shine.

Wedding hairstylist Senada Ceka says that this is one of her go-tos's when she’s styling curls for its volumizing effect and shining results.

Amazon reviewers agree that it’s the best hair diffuser on the market for enhancing their curls. “Sure does make the curls curl! My hair was full of body and really made it look like I just left the salon! My curls were just like they were when I was little- bouncy and so pretty,” says one 5-star review.

“I was pleasantly surprised when I received it, and it fits perfectly. It also dries my hair quickly while creating very little frizz,” says their 5-star Amazon review. They add it only takes 10 minutes to diffuse their medium-to-long wavy hair at low heat and low speed settings.

    Italy Dryer Diffuser

    Italy Dryer Diffuser
    Pros
    • Sleek design
    • Two models: Snap and slide closures
    Cons
    • Only compatible with BaByliss dryers

Another favorite of Ceka's, this hair diffuser lifts and separates hair while creating soft, bouncy curls without the frizz. This snap-on attachment fits the BaBylissPRO Volare V1, Portofino, and recently discontinued Luminoso Dryers, while the slide-on hair diffuser is compatible with almost a dozen BaByliss hair dryers.

This pick is easy to use, but it's also great for your hair: It works for just about any hair type to add volume and shine, and it cuts your drying time down.

“This is a critical attachment when blow drying any type of textured hair. Happy days for me, my clients, and the salon,” adds one 5-star Amazon review.

    Supersonic Diffuser

    Editor’s Choice
    Supersonic Diffuser
    Pros
    • Magnetic attachment
    • Prongs are compatible with all hair lengths
    Cons
    • Only works with the Supersonic

Not one, not two, but three celebrity hairstylists (Cheryl Bergamy, Michelle Cleveland, and Michael Boychuck) that we spoke to for this article all praised the wonders of this hair diffuser from Dyson. This diffusing attachment has extra-long prongs to get deeper into your hair, cutting down drying time in half.

But the true magic of this diffuser lies within its meticulous engineering, which means that it disperses air evenly around your curls for a more defined, frizz-free, and voluminous look.

However, there is one drawback: This attachment only works on the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, which costs a pretty penny (but is totally worth it if you have the cash to spend). Our beauty editor, Nicole Saunders, considers this the gold standard of beauty tools. To quote her recent review, “You can be a complete beginner or a professional hairstylist working on A-listers, and you’d still fall in love with this hot tool like I have.”

How Do You Use a Hair Diffuser?

    black line break

Before tackling your curls, Taylor recommends following this quick step-by-step guide for styling your hair:

    1. Detangle wet hair with a leave-in conditioner after washing.
    2. Follow up with a heat-protection spray to guard your delicate strands against any heat damage.
    3. Add the diffuser attachment to the blow dryer and part the hair into four sections.
    4. Add one section at a time to the diffuser by inserting hair, starting from the bottom and scrunching to mid-shaft or roots with low heat and low pressure. Using low heat and pressure is extremely important in order not to increase the risk of heat damage to your hair.
    5. Rotate between sections every 25 to 30 seconds until dry.
    6. Finish off with any oils or curl-defining creams as you see fit, and voilà!
