We've all heard it a thousand times: You really need to wear sunscreen — and you need to wear it every single day. But did you know that you should also reapply throughout the day? That seems pretty easy, but if you have a full face of makeup on, then slathering on a layer of goopy, white sunblock just doesn't seem ideal.

But there’s a way to have your sun protection and keep your makeup intact. Meet your new sun-care BFF: powder sunscreen.

What Is Powder Sunscreen?

As the name suggests, powder sunscreen is a powdered form of sunblock that gives you the same SPF protection as regular liquid and creams, without the greasy residue or streakiness. Plus, it makes it easier to protect an important area where liquid sunscreens just don't cut it: your scalp.

“Powder sunscreens make it much easier and more comfortable to keep your scalp protected,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Ellen Marmur, M.D. “You can swipe the powder onto your roots, leaving you with an SPF-protected scalp, and even cover up some unwanted oil in the hair for a more refreshed look.”

    How to Shop

    Skin Type

Powder sunscreens are usually made to absorb oil on your face, so oily skin types will love just about every formula on this list. However, drier complexions may need to opt for a lighter powder formula so your face won't look dry and ghoulish throughout the day. As for sensitive skin types, using a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic option is crucial to avoid an allergic reaction. And as always, with any new skincare product, make sure you patch test on a small area of unexposed skin to make sure your complexion won't get irritated.

    Powder Shade

Just like traditional liquid sunscreen, whiter shades of powder can leave an ashy, unflattering finish on deeper skin tones. Thankfully, many brands offer a variety of tinted powder shades to choose from, so you can find your perfect match with ease. Other formulas that don't have extensive shade options usually have a universally tinted shade, which works for a larger range.

    Application

Although powder sunscreens are an awesome way to touch up your SPF protection throughout the day, they shouldn't be your only source of sun protection. You should start your pre-makeup routine with a conventional liquid sunscreen to give yourself a base layer of SPF to protect your skin. Then feel free to top off your makeup with one of these powder formulas every two hours — remember, SPF reapplication is key to keeping your skin guarded.

And while these powder sunscreens are tinted, most of them won't act as a full-coverage powder foundation. If you're a complexion product minimalist, then swiping these powders on is a great way to reduce oil without leaving a white cast or ashy finish, but if you need full coverage, then stick to your usual foundation and apply your powder sunscreen after your entire makeup routine.

    SPF Coverage

Just as the American Academy of Dermatology recommends, you should always use an SPF of at least 30 to protect your skin. While you technically can use powder sunscreens as your main form of head-to-toe sunscreen, Marmur recommends using both liquid and powder for an optimal SPF guard. She advises, “Make sure you're spreading the product evenly in order to keep the SPF consistent,” says Marmur.

Ready for some fun in the sun? Then don't forget to pack one of these powder sunscreens — take a look at some of our favorites below. In addition to some expert recommendations, we included products selected by our beauty editor for their impressive ingredient list, user reviews, and how they work with different skin tones and types.

Spending almost $70 on a single powder sunscreen sounds over-the-top, but more than 1,800 5-star Amazon reviews and skin care experts agree that this one performs much better than cheaper options.

Celebrity esthetician Taylor Worden loves using this all-in-one sunscreen and recommends stashing it in your bag at all times. The mineral-powder formula provides SPF 50 protection, it's water- and sweat-resistant for 80 minutes, and it includes hyaluronic acid for hydration.

Board-certified dermatologists Dr. Hadley King, M.D., and Dr. Jessie Cheung, M.D., are also fans because it's one of the few powder sunscreens that use iron oxides to shield the skin from blue light and antioxidants to protect from infrared radiation. Impressively, it's the only powder sunscreen on this list that has antimicrobial bristles to keep your brush sanitary and your skin germ-free.

According to reviews, this is also a great option for those who struggle to keep their scalp from getting sunburned because it blends easily.

Sun protection that also sets your makeup? Best idea ever. This 100% mineral powder from Supergoop has SPF 35 built-in, along with ceramides and olive glycerides that seal in moisture for a hydrated look and feel.

This is one of the rare mineral sunscreens that won't leave behind an ashy white cast. Instead, reviewers say it performs like a skin-blurring powder foundation covering redness and dark spots without a cakey finish. They also love that the skin-perfecting coverage lasts for hours and doesn't easily rub off during the summer. King adds that it is fantastic at mattifying shiny skin.

Supergoop!’s SPF also earned the Clean at Sephora seal, indicating it's made without potentially harmful ingredients, meaning it's gentle and safe for super sensitive skin.

With more than 1,800 positive reviews on Amazon, it's safe to say that Brush On Block is well-liked by shoppers. Dermatologists like Cheung appreciate that it’s available in a universally flattering translucent shade made from finely milled rice starch powder. King is a fan of this powder sunscreen too and considers it the best mess-free sunblock to touch up makeup and hair.

As popular as this moderately priced powder sunscreen is, it’s not a complete dupe for the Colorscience sunblock, our best overall pick, according to one Amazon reviewer who owns both SPFs.

They’re both water-resistant sunscreens that offer broad-spectrum protection from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. However, Colorscience's sunscreen costs more because it provides a higher sun protection factor and shields against infrared heat and blue light. Having said that, you should opt for Brush On Block if you’re on a budget and not concerned about blue light from your tech and infrared heat from the sun.

Cheung says it’s made with quality ingredients like titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and botanical extracts. Its tinted formula is non-comedogenic, talc-free, and hypoallergenic, so it stays on your skin without clogging any pores.

Ulta reviewers say it provides a gorgeous airbrush finish that’s earned them countless compliments from friends and colleagues.

The pocket-sized compact is also perfect for your work tote or beach bag — it comes with a built-in mirror and a kabuki brush so you can touch up your face on the go.

Less is more when it comes to products for sensitive skin. Derma-E's powder sunscreen is only made with 12 natural ingredients, a relatively low number for a sunscreen, regardless of the formula.

It guards your skin with mineral blockers, while green tea and vitamin E are rich in antioxidants to tackle lines and wrinkles. Speaking of aging, it also contains skin-plumping silica and glow-enhancing mica, so anyone with mature skin will love this product, too.

Hundreds of reviewers add that the silky powder prevents shine and leaves their skin looking smooth and even-toned.

If you're searching for a vegan formula, then Tarte's sunblock should be at the top of your list. This entirely plant-based SPF 30 formula uses only mineral sun protectants (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide), so you won't have to worry about any chemicals in your sunblock.

It also contains vanilla, an antioxidant-rich natural fragrance that helps minimize signs of aging. However, reviewers say it has a light vanilla-meets-baby-powder smell, so you should opt for a different SPF if you're not into scents.

This Tarte sunscreen is also safe for sensitive and mature skin types. “I cannot use any kind of sunscreen around my eyes without them getting weepy within an hour of putting it on. With this, I have no reaction at all,” says one 60-year-old Amazon reviewer. Other reviewers say it doesn’t sink into face lines if you buff the product into your skin with the built-in brush.

Sometimes sun protection alone isn't enough for your skincare needs. Opt for this blue-light-blocking powder sunscreen on days you want to shield yourself from the sun's rays while working on your laptop. Blue light is emitted from electronic gadgets and can speed up aging and cause dark spots and redness.

Cheung and Amazon reviewers say the non-scratchy brush bristles distribute the silky, smooth, and sheer formulation across the skin with ease. They're not the only fans — our former beauty editor Jennifer Hussein is a huge fan. “I always keep this powder sunscreen within arm’s reach for its easy-to-use application and purse-friendly size.”
