As the CBD market continues to grow, one sector that's trending right now in a big way is topical CBD skincare and cosmetics. Scientific research has already backed the calming effects of CBD for skin conditions, including inflammation and chronic psoriasis, and ongoing studies are looking into the positive effects CBD can potentially have on acne and dermatitis. It makes sense, then, that we're seeing CBD pop up in cosmetic ingredient lists — from sheet masks to serums to bath salts.
Everything to Know About CBD and Your Skin
Before we dive into all of the skincare benefits of CBD, first we should understand what exactly it is. Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali, M.D. FAAD, says that CBD actually stands for cannabidiol, and it's extracted from the cannabis plant.
“It’s been used for centuries for a variety of ailments, including pain relief and inflammation,” he says. “It’s been gaining more and more popularity recently as early research is starting to look at the potential benefits.”
So, what are those precious skin benefits Dr. Bhanusali is talking about? Though he does note that the research is still coming in on what exactly CBD does for your skin, he says that there have been promising results supporting the role of CBD as a potent anti-inflammatory. "There are also larger-scale trials going on to examine [CBD's] benefit with acne and psoriasis," he says.
Overall, if you’re looking for a skincare ingredient that’ll calm your skin, Dr. Bhanusali says CBD could be for you — but, as per usual when you’re trying out something new on your face, consult with a trusted dermatologist first to see if it’s the right fit for your complexion needs.

Her work has been featured in Allure, Byrdie, HelloGiggles, and more.
