There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Palette by Pak Original High Fiver

The Tester: Mara Santilli, a traveler who likes to keep her packing light

The Brief: Isn’t it the worst when you’re trying to pack toiletries, even for an overnight trip, and you have to stuff your bag with either full-sized bottles of cleanser and moisturizer, or a ton of little TSA-friendly plastic bottles?

That’s what I wanted to avoid for my most recent weekend getaway. All I had to do was pack Palette by Pak's Original High-Fiver (which is available on Amazon too), and I had all my skincare essentials — moisturizer, cleanser, face balm, lotion, and primer — all in one convenient spot. It made traveling absolutely seamless.

I was only going away for a weekend, and wasn’t flying or traveling far from home, but what I liked was the convenience of having all of my products right in one place, without bottles and containers rolling around my bag. The five wells of the palette each have lids that screw shut securely so you don’t have to worry about any liquids or lotions escaping. Plus, the palette measures 7.5 inches in length by 1.5 inches in width, so it’s easy to stash inside your favorite travel case without taking up too much space.

The flexible wells of the palette are designed to pop up so that you can extract every last drop of product. You can even purchase the High Fiver with a Spatty cosmetic spatula to easily scrape out your favorite gels, creams, or moisturizers from the jar and into the wells. Then, whether you want to clean out the palette or take it on another vacation, you can wash it with soap and water and reuse the wells as many times as you want.

The eco-friendly aspect is certainly worth mentioning, too. Not only is the product made from over 30% recycled plastic, but it’s packaged with post-consumer waste as well. Palette by Pak’s mission is to cut back on single-use plastics when you travel. (Think about it — how many hotel rooms or Airbnbs actually provide a recycling bin that’s separate from the trash can?). This way, you’re re-using one product to store toiletries rather than purchasing and then throwing away tiny single-use bottles every time you travel.

The product costs $39.00, but once you make that one-time investment, you'll never have to race to the pharmacy to buy travel-sized toiletries again.

You can also store a variety of products in the High Fiver. You can add anything from glitter to makeup to lotion in the tubs — or hey, even your vitamins if you give it a good rinse beforehand. The only things that would be super weird to try to stash in there would be mouthwash or toothpaste — with those, you’re much better off buying the minis, unfortunately. But other than that, the sky is the limit when it comes to skincare and makeup.

Closing argument: I would take the High Fiver with me anywhere, from an overnight to a full week (I really think the wells would hold enough product to get me through the week!). I’m definitely not switching back to multiple mini toiletry bottles any time soon.
