There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determine that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: GLAMGLOW SUPERMATTIFY Clarifying Oil-Control Face Primer

Tester: Caitlyn Fitzpatrick, has combination skin and hates getting shiny

The Brief: You know that scene in Mean Girls when The Plastics start criticizing themselves in the mirror? Let’s just say that I would be Regina George, the one whose “pores are huge.” So when I heard that GLAMGLOW’s new primer reduces pores and helps prevents shine throughout the day and fights breakouts, I was sold on giving it a try.

Inside the GLAMGLOW SUPERMATTIFY compact, you’ll find a tiny pink spatula, a mirror, and the actual primer that’s made with charcoal and oil-balancing clay. To use, start with enough primer to cover a quarter of the spatula and massage the product between your fingers to activate the acid blend. Then apply it to your desired areas — simple! And let me tell you, a little bit of this product goes a long way.

Let’s talk about first impressions: The GLAMGLOW primer feels like silk on your skin. It doesn’t feel like the product is sitting on top of it (you all know what I mean). And when I rub it on my nose, specifically, I notice that my pores instantly become more even. While you'd think that an additional makeup layer underneath foundation would be problematic for acne-prone skin types, this primer is actually enhanced with a pimple-fighting formula. It creates a smooth surface for application and fights those future blemishes.

The primer was designed for those with normal, combination, and oily skin, and it's made with a six-acid blend (lactic acid, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, mandelic acid, tartaric acid, and pyruvic acid) to help keep skin clear. This was music to my ears, as I tend to get oily and break out in my T-zone. Since that’s the problem area on my face, that’s where I apply the GLAMGLOW primer, but you could certainly use it all over your face if needed!

I’ve applied this primer in the morning more than a dozen times, and I’ve never had the need to touch up my face by late afternoon — which I consider a true testimony to a good primer. Have you ever looked at yourself in a mirror for the first time all day and wondered why no one told you to, like, spruce up? That’s especially true during the summer — for me, anyway — so I’m excited to see how it holds up when it’s 90 degrees outside.

Closing Argument: As someone with combination skin, I’m happy to have found a primer that keeps helps control the inevitable shine that comes from being a human. On the flip side, the GLAMGLOW SUPERMATTIFY Face Primer didn’t dry me out either. It's possible that this product has struck the perfect oil-controlling/hydration balance!
