Concealer is an amazing way to cover up blemishes, dark circles, and other uneven spots on your face, but it comes with its own troubles. It tends to get stuck in little creases and fine lines, highlighting those spots rather than neutralizing them, particularly when you pile it on. This easy trick from makeup artist Lavonne Anthony helps fix that problem, allowing you to get the smooth and even under eye areas you want — without caking on your makeup.

Step 1

Apply a liquid or cream concealer using a concealer brush like the pro-recommended pick Chanel Pinceau Correcteur Concealer Brush #10 ($32, Nordstrom.com), blending it to cover your entire under eye area for a smooth finish. (If you want to brighten up your face even more, use the beloved triangle concealer trick.) Start with a minimal amount of concealer, then add more as needed. You don't want to overdo it, lest you wind up with way too much — a common mistake that can make you look older rather than less tired.

Step 2

Anthony recommends using a small makeup sponge, like the Beauty Blender Micro Mini ($18 for 2, Sephora.com), to apply a loose translucent powder — she likes Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder ($25, Sephora.com) — over your concealer. "The mini sponge gets right in the corner of the eye better than a brush can, and it sets the makeup as to look as though it's been airbrushed," says Anthony. She also emphasizes the importance of setting your concealer quickly, otherwise it can start to crease in any fine lines.
