After-hours styles don't have be stiff or overly elaborate.

Just as the holiday party circuit calls for dresses that dazzle, your hair deserves extra attention, too. After-hours styles don't have to be stiff or overly elaborate. These three looks deliver on glam but in an approachable (translation: touchable) way, for evening hair you can still run your fingers through. Here, New York City hair stylist Jacob Rozenberg deconstructs each one.

Step 1

On wet hair, add a volumizing mousse like Rusk Styling Collection Volumizing Mousse. "Instead of applying it straight to your hair, put it on your brush and brush it through," Rozenberg says. "This will ensure it's evenly distributed."

Create lift by first flipping your head upside down and rough-drying with your fingers. Try the Infiniti Pro by Conair 3Q, which dries hair super fast without causing damage and boosts shine thanks to built-in ionic technology. Flip your head back up, and then blow-dry from side to side until your hair is almost dry.

Step 3

Using a round boar bristle brush like Conair Mega Ceramic Medium Vented Round Boar Brush, blow-dry your hair in sections. Once hair is dry, aim the dryer straight down the hair shaft and hit the cold shot button to seal the cuticle. "If the cuticle is open, your hair will end up looking frizzy," Rozenberg says. Set by spraying hairspray on a flat boar bristle brush and passing it through your hair.

After applying a mousse on wet hair from roots to ends, twist hair in three-inch sections and run the blow dryer down the shaft (until hair is about 70 percent dry) to create body and wave.

Wrap three-inch sections around a 1½-inch barrel curling iron, such as the Conair Instant Heat 1-1/2" Curling Iron. Start wrapping at about ear height so the bend doesn't begin too high. "Hold it until you can feel the heat coming through the hair," says Rozenberg. This should be about six seconds.

Finish with a spritz of texturizing spray like Rusk Styling Collection Texture Spray to add volume and hold, and then brush your hair so the waves look uniform and sleek.

Step 1

Smooth wet hair with a wide-tooth comb and create a middle part. Make two thick braids on either side of your face. "This will give you a shiny yet textured look when you pull your hair back," Rozenberg says. Blow-dry braids until they're about 80 percent dry. Then dry the back of your hair.

Step 2

Sweep your hair, except for the braids, into a low ponytail. "When you create a ponytail, lift your chin up to get the style tighter," Rozenberg says. "If your chin is down, it will look loose in the back."

Step 3

Undo the braids and pull those sections into a ponytail, securing it directly on top of the first ponytail. Then combine both ponytails into one, divide the hair into two sections, and twist down to the ends, fastening with an elastic. Wrap hair into a bun and secure with pins.
